What is a "Western"?
The words "The Wild West" conjure up images of cowboys and their loyal steeds, gunslingers and their shining pistols, cattle and trains and wide open praries and bustling little towns. While not inaccurate, this picture barely scratches the surface of what a Western can be!
I'll come right out and admit I don't have a way with words like some people do. You can read all kinds of beautiful, poetic explanations of Westerns elsewhere, so I'll just tell you, in my own inelegant ineloquent terms, what Westerns are.

The ideals of the cowboy vary depending on who you ask. Probably the most well known Cowboy Code is that of Gene Autry.
Such a lovely sentiment. This is just one perspective though, and obviously many cowboys don't adhere to such commandments. Besides, westerns would be awfully boring if every Hollywood horseman were a shining beacon of morality.
